4 out of 5 stars its good, but needs improvement   May 20, 2010

I love it, in theory. In practice it upsets me all the time. The resolution of the screen is lower than expected. I don't need it to be great, but good would be nice. The viewing of raw files is painful, but possible. It does not support any of my video files yet. The menu is not intuitive or easy to figure out based on the symbols on the keys (some of which are just parts of the screen). It could stand to take a page from Apple.

That said it downloads faster than any other backup device I have used. Faster than the Epsons by leaps and bounds (those are pretty but slow as molasses). Faster than the Hyperdrive even. Though that has a terrible interface too, I cannot say I prefer this interface, or screen. I do however like how fast it is. What I don't like is that it gets stuck downloading files sometimes, and needs to be hard reset with a pin or paper clip. It happens enough that I tape a pin to it, and use it regularly. I find that it seems to be when I download a card with large video files on it. Usually after a reboot I try again and it works just fine. Usually. Sometimes it takes a few cycles.

I did have a HD failure already, not a good sign but the upside is support was fantastic. They had it swapped out quickly and painlessly. Though they did not ship it back with a tracking number, or even tell me it was coming back, and it did take longer than promised, though faster than advertised originally. I felt confident that support was on my side and that they had faith in the product and the company. They knew what they were doing and how to fix my problems. I have nothing but respect for that. In fact that is main reason I did not resell this and get a hyperdrive.

The battery life is OK, not great, but not bad considering the space available for a battery in there. This entire device is small, smaller than the Epsons, about the same as the hyperdrive maybe a touch smaller. It is is heavy for its size, and the wheel sticks out of the front so it takes more space than you might expect, but all in all this is quite small. I have portable HDDs this big and heavy and they dont have screens or a gazillion card readers.

I like that I can copy a card to a card, to a different kind of card, to a USB drive, to a USB HDD or thumbdrive. I can save around 25 16gig cards to this without worrying. I have copied at most 8 16 gig cards to this at one time and never had a problem, other than that HDD failure which happened in such a way that I did not lose any of my images thankfully.

This device is great for what it is. It has shortcomings for sure, but once they fix those I believe that this can be a really great device. Once they give it the ability to play a .mov video file of my 7D, or import it without crashing at least, and once they increase the screen resolution and give it little pep when viewing large raw files it will be perfect. The UI I can live with, its not a deal breaker. The rest I can wait for, as long as it keeps backing up cards quickly and accurately I am a happy camper.
